You will be aware that the global Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope project (www.skatelescope.org) is one of the flagship science and innovation investments for South Africa. It is also a unique example of science diplomacy, bringing together nations from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australasia and Europe, with the ambition to not only explore the universe with the world’s largest radio telescope, but also to develop cutting-edge disruptive technologies, crucial for economic and social development. The success of the SKA project is not only dependent on this extensive global cooperation, but the project in turn also plays a valuable part in fostering international solidarity and friendship.
These multiple facets of the SKA project will be presented and interrogated by an international panel of experts during a special side event “The Square Kilometre Array: A global Research Infrastructure for the 21st Century and beyond” organised on the occasion of the current 75th General Assembly of the United Nations.
