The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) hosted the IST-Africa Conference from 31 May – 2 June 2023 at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa.
IST-Africa Week 2023 provided an international forum to showcase existing technology-enabled Research, Innovation and ICT4D activities and capacity in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world.
The Conference programme combined strategic keynote presentations, a High-Level Roundtable, technical and policy papers, case studies and workshops.

SIDE EVENTS
The Strategic Partnerships Directorate (SP) at the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), responsible for managing the South Africa (SA) – European Union (EU) Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Cooperation hosted two sessions/side events titled: “Showcasing success stories of previously funded ICT project under the SA-EU STI Cooperation” and “Opportunities in the SA-EU STI Cooperation” at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria.
On 1 June 2023, the Directorate showcased success stories and the impact of previously funded ICT projects of the European Union Framework Programme. Furthermore, this opportunity allowed the showcasing of the ESASTAP website and facilitated the desired reach across South Africa and Africa. Attendants learnt about available opportunities within the SA-European cooperation, how to access them and the application processes on the website.
The second session aimed to present and highlight the Horizon Europe Framework Programme opportunities specifically in the Digital Industry thematic areas available to the South African National System of Innovation (NSI). This session was held on 2 June 2023.
ESASTAP is a collaboration between the Department of Science and Innovation, partnering member states and the European Commission. The programme’s main objective is to strengthen ties within the field of science, technology and innovation. Funding for projects, mainly sourced from both the Department of Science and Innovation of the Republic of South Africa and the European Commission.
