2025 – date and venue to be confirmed
South Africa will host the G20 Summit in 2025—exact date and venue to be confirmed—marking the country’s second time leading this significant global event.
As South Africa prepares to assume the Group of Twenty (G20) presidency in 2025, this pivotal moment to influence global policies and advocate for Africa’s interests on the world stage.
The theme “Fostering Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainable Development” aims to tackle critical global challenges with a particular emphasis on Africa’s development.
The G20 is an intergovernmental economic forum that includes 19 countries and two regional unions: the European Union (EU) and the recently added African Union (AU).
Key focus areas for South Africa’s presidency will include addressing the intertwined challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality, while prioritising Africa’s development in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, entitled “The Africa We Want.”
Additionally, South Africa aims to confront poly-crises such as climate change, food security, energy issues, and debt—challenges that disproportionately affect Africa and other developing nations. The presidency will also highlight infrastructure development and global governance reforms initiated by previous G20 leaders.
As G20 president, South Africa will work to address global economic challenges and promote sustainable development, guided by its National Development Plan, Agenda 2063, and enduring priorities within the G20 framework.
South Africa is expected to take over the presidency of the G20 from 1 December this year.
